Surf City Race Recap

13.1 miles running & 7 miles on the bike
Silly Strides

Since there’s nothing better than guilt-free junk food imbibing on Super Bowl Sunday, I opted to once again run my not so favorite course because the ends justified the means.

IMG_2856What, you ask?  That pesky foot of mine?  Running?  *Gasp*

This is exactly why you need a good Sports Med doc (link to one I saw this week) who really understands mechanics, etc. and can ART the crap out of your tendons.  Turns out my foot problem, was really a crabby calf problem and we got it under control enough for me to continue training.

So early this morning, Margot, Sarah and I met at the starting line of the Surf City Half Marathon…and by meet I mean, the two of them came FLYING up about 10 seconds before our wave set off.

As the self-proclaimed BBB (Bruised & Broken Brigade) we set out to just have a fun training run- no Garmin, no obsessing about the time…just running. And fun we had.  While it wasn’t a PR for time, I did PR in special skills – I did get to practice other fun race skills like picking up dropped Gu without stopping running, grabbing dropped water bottles, taking pictures while running backwards (evidence below) and taking the most ridiculous race photos ever.  I’m pretty sure someone at MarathonFoto is going to be very scared when they find our bib #’s.

The name of the game was fun and just running whatever we felt.  I think we were all surprised (except for Margot because she had on the watch) to find out we ran as fast as we did – all the while ensuring some Macarena and Gangam Style moves got laid out on the course.

When all was said and done we finished and even managed to find Skinny Runner and Monica (who was celebrating a big ol’ PR) after the full marathon and after chatting about important things like running spanx and how sexy compression socks are, we all went our separate ways to seek out some football and undoubtedly naughty foods.

Do you ever un-race your races?

What’s your favorite day to race on?
Any day when I want to eat anything the rest of the day seems like a good day to race for me 🙂

  1. Nice training run! Actually, most of the half marathons I’ve done have been “training” runs. I should probably race one eventually…

We’re dealing with very similar calf/PF issues but we’re still running so that’s good news! Any chance you want to run 18 miles in 2 weeks?? I need a long run buddy!!

  2. Honestly, I just in the past year or so have done a few races this way. If you’re doing it w/ friends, it’s so much fun and nice break from always working hard, both mentally and physically. Good for you. Loving all the Oiselle colors out there!

  3. Hi Sheila!! Hope your calf issues heal soon.

Nice “training” run!! Looks like you ladies had a wonderful time. 🙂 Hope to see you soon so, we catch up IRL.
